The Wailing Bean Sidhe

Downton 2x3 Thoughts

The rest of you have already seen series two in its entirety, so you can ignore this completely; I guess I just wanted to put it out into the universe.

1. The genetic impossibility of Mary Crawley’s gorgeous dark brown eyes, given her blue-eyed parentage, is bothering me quite a lot. But she’s a living, breathing John Singer Sargent painting so all is forgiven.

2. The flimsy excuse for Branson’s continued residence in England through and after Easter 1916 is entirely unconvincing. Not that I’d want him wrapped up in the violence of “Ireland’s Opportunity,” but wouldn’t he want to be home, at least to administer beatdowns to Black and Tans? Fellowes is really setting him up for the unhappy life of a post-independence paramilitary. Enjoy RIRA, Branson.

3. Rather than “If You Were the Only Girl in the world,” I half-expected “You are Sixteen Going on Seventeen” to come out of Matthew’s mouth as he walked down that aisle. I really did. Then a rainy dance in the gazebo. He was oh so very Rolfy, minus the Nazi trappings.

4. I have successfully implanted Bates-to-Mosely’s “I’d say he’s keen. I’d say he’s very keen indeed” (re Anna) from the series 1 finale into Husband-san’s vernacular.
